Communication Characteristics of a Poisson Channel.
Abstract
The report presents the results of an investigation of the use of photoelectron counting for the measurement of optical signal intensity variations. This form of measurement provides a means for demodulating optical communication signals when the received light is so weak that the statistics of photoelectron emission are important for signal processing. An experimental system is described which performs this type of measurement and a second order moment or spectral theory for processing photoelectron counts is presented. Experimental measurements are described which verify the theory and show that the count signal has a signal dependent noise explainable by higher order moment theory. (Author)
