Features of Periclase Crystallization in Clinker (Osobennosti Kristallizatsii Periklaza v Klinkere).

Abstract

Investigations have shown that the volume expansion of cements due to the hydration of magnesium oxide is largely determined by the size of the periclase grains and the nature of their distribution in the clinker. It has also been found that the periclase crystallization varies depending on whether the clinkers were obtained from limestone-slag or limestone-clay mixes. Thus, in clinkers obtained from mixes with magnesia-containing blastfurnance slags, the periclase is in a finely divided state (the grain sizes ranging predominantly from 1-2 to 7 micrometers) and uniformly distributed throughout the mass of clinker granules, whereas in clinkers obtained from limestone-clay raw mixes, the limestone of which has a high magnesia content, the periclase grains are larger in size (10-20 micrometers) and frequenctly form coarse aggregations. It is therefore of interest to establish the reasons for the difference in periclase crystallization, and that is what the research reported here has attempted to do. (Author)
