On the Effects of Undesired Signal Interferences to a Coherent Digital Carrier.

Abstract

The paper investigates the problem of estimating the effects of interference to a coherent PSK digital carrier. The principal tool utilized is the Cramer-Chernoff bound with upper bound approximations having the form of an algebraic factor times an exponential. The argument of the exponential is an equivalent SNR. This SNR can be calculated by allocating the effects of the larger interferers to an equivalent coherent canceling sine wave and the remaining interferers to an equivalent source of thermal noise. Subject to an envelope constraint, any allocation of the interferers between a canceling sine wave and thermal noise is allowed. Therefore, characterizing that allocation of interferers which produces a large equivalent SNR is of great interest. The principal contribution of this paper resides in the ability to characterize this choice with relatively simple ratios of carrier, interference, and actual thermal noise powers. (Author)
