Studies of Solid Helium Below 1.0K.

Abstract

The report provides a summary of the research results obtained. The primary thrust of the work has been the development and application of heat pulse techniques to the study of condensed helium. Extensive work has been done on liquid He4 and on single crystals of He4. In the latter, diffusive, second-sound and ballistic modes of heat propagation have been observed and analyzed in terms of intrinsic properties of the system. This work has led to new information about solid helium, and has also revealed instrumental and interpretational subtleties associated with the heat pulse techniques used. (Author)
