Range-Only Multiple Aircraft Navigation System (ROMANS).

Abstract

The report describes the system design and flight test evaluation of a Range-Only Multiple Aircraft Navigation System (ROMANS) deployed at Griffiss AFB, Rome NY. The ROMANS system consists of a command station, two remote (Beacon) stations, an aircraft station with steering meter capability and an aircraft station which was used on the ground during the test program. In operation, radio pulses initiated at the command station are transmitted to the aircraft both directly and via the remote stations. Distance measurements derived from these pulses are used in the command station computer to determine aircraft position. The system has hardware provision for accepting aircraft altitude data, if available, for use under conditions of poor geometry. (Author)
