In situ Site Survey, Vibratory and Seismic Techniques, Brown's Ferry Nuclear Plant, Decatur, Alabama.

Abstract

The results of the vibratory and refraction seismic survey at the proposed site of the intake channel for Brown's Ferry Nuclear Plant, Decatur, Alabama, indicated the existence of three subsurface zones. The near-surface zone ranged in compression wave velocity from 2000 to 2340 fps to a maximum depth of 12 ft. The second zone 20 to 24 ft. Limestone bedrock, encountered below the second zone, ranged in velocity from 15,000 to 19,000 fps and was detected between elevations 514 and 523, or about 30 to 40 ft below the ground surface. The shear wave velocities ranged from a low of 310 fps at 4 ft to a high of 2120 fps at 106 ft. (Author)
