PDQ-1, Partial, Differential Equation Solution, Graphics Version I.

Abstract

PDQ 1 is an interactive graphics solution to an important class of second order linear partial differential equations (Laplace and Poisson). Finite difference approximations are made of the derivatives, in cartesian coordinates, employing a generalized irregular star for the computation stencil. Program options include variable grid size, curved boundaries, 'mirror' boundary edges for repeating sections, and hard copy (plotter) of problem domain with contour maps of selected values of the solved variable. Use of the program is illustrated with problems in electric field potential distribution, torsion of bars, and steady state temperature distribution. PDQ 1 was written for a CDC 6500/1700/274 facility operating under SCOPE 3.3, IGS V.2 employing 10 overlays and 50K bytes of storage. (Author)
