Research Studies of a 100-Case Sample of Neurotic Patients Using the NAVY MEDical Information STorage And Retrieval System (NAVY MEDISTARS).

Abstract

The NAVY MEDical Information STorage And Retrieval System (NAVY MEDISTARS) was used to conduct research studies of a 100-case sample of anonymous case history report for neurotic patients. The computer output from 40 research queries was analyzed and the results were tabulated and interpreted. These 40 research queries were aimed at elucidating certain biographic and demographic characteristics of the sample of neurotic patients, use and abuse of alcohol and drugs, marital relations, and patients' attitude toward their parents. Also investigated were the incidence and nature of the following variables: parental deprivation in childhood, childhood and adult enuresis, childhood neurotic traits, phobias, obesity, malingering, psychomotor behavior, feelings of inferiority, intropunitive and extrapunitive ideation, suicide attempt, physiological disorders having a psychogenic basis, motivation for treatment, use of narcotherapy, sleep and appetite disorders, hysterical symptoms, family separation reaction, and combat reaction. In addition, the drugs prescribed to treat these 100 neurotic patients were related to final diagnosis and to symptomatology. The drugs used to attempt suicide were also investigated. During the reporting period a sample of 28 anonymous case history reports for psychotic patients was supplied by the Navy Medical Neuropsychiatric Research Unit, San Diego, and indexed for input to the NAVY MEDISTARS data base.
