Fabrication and Properties of Silicon Compounds.

Abstract

A study was made to: Investigate the relation between strength, fracture energy, and microstructure; basically, it was the purpose of this task to determine why silicon nitride is so strong relative to other ceramics; Determine the hot-pressing behavior of silicon nitride with an emphasis on the role of the additive required to densify silcon nitride powder; Study the densification of silicon nitride by the powder-vehicle hot-pressing technique and dtermine the limitations of this technique; Determine the dielectric properties of reaction-sintered and hot-pressed silicon nitride between 1-10 GHz.
