Judgment of Skill Retention,

Abstract

An experiment was performed to determine if people can make accurate judgments of skill after the passing of no-practice intervals. The specific objectives of the study were: to determine the effect of the duration of the no-practice interval on judgments of retained skill; to determine the accuracy of these judgments; to examine the efficacy of an ad libitum rehearsal program in the maintenance of skill level; and to examine judged skill level as a function of judged amounts of retraining needed to reach criterion. It was hypothesized that Ss would overestimate their skill levels after the passing of a no-practice level. The results showed that the majority of people overestimated their first retraining trial performance and underestimated their need to retrain. (Author)
