The Sensitivity of the Human Diploid Cellular Strain WI-38 Reported to Different Viruses. Part II,
Abstract
The report deals with the description of the sensitivity of a WI-38 strain to a laboratory group of strains of myxoviruses, adenoviruses herpes simplex viruses, the tick-borne encephalitis viruses and those of lymphocytic choriomeningitis. Studies revealed that the WI-38 strain proved to be less sensitive to a group of enteroviruses and myxoviruses as compared with monkey kidney cells, less sensitive to adenoviruses as compared to the HeLa cells, probably equally sensitive as rabbit kidneys to the herpes simplex virus, sensitive to the virus of the Czechoslovak encephalitis, to the virus of lymphocytic choriomeningitis and a little less sensitive than the HEP-2 line to the RS virus and that of the amniotic cellular lines to the scarlet fever virus. It is possible that a certain effect on the final results of the investigations in which continuous cellular lines and viruses adapted to them were used could have been caused by the presence of PPLO in the cellular lines. The investigation of the strain WI-38 on the PPLO presence performed by Dr. Sobeslavsky of the Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Prague revealed a repeatedly negative result.
