A Monte Carlo Simulation Model for the Prediction of Fleet Maintenance Requirements,

Abstract

Recently, the Department of Defense has been emphasizing improved maintenance management techniques in an attempt to improve equipment availability and to reduce increasing costs of maintaining military in response to the cost and availability goals set by the Department of Defense. These methods, however, have resulted in limited application due to complexity and lack of generality. The purpose of the paper is to provide a method for use by the maintenance manager in making maintenance operations decisions, without succumbing to the pitfalls that have limited the application of previous work. The two areas of maintenance management which are stressed in the report are spare parts provisioning and manpower planning. The model developed is based on Monte Carlo simulation and is completely general. The simulation procedure is presented in the form of a computer program with additional provisions made for hand application. (Author)
