Optimal Specification of Parallel Redundancies, Spare Spares, and Repair Facilities for Steady State Conditions with Multiple Failure and Repair Rates,

Abstract

A parallel redundant operational system with N units in parallel, M spares and R service facilities is considered. The failure time distribution of each type of unit is taken as the negative exponential with a failure rate lambda, and the repair time distribution of each repair facility is a negative exponential with repair rate mu. A system with one failure rate and repair rate is considered along with a system that has multiple failure rates and repair rates. The steady state availability equations for any combination of N, M, and R are determined. A method for finding the optimum combination of N, M, and R for a specified availability is illustrated by a numerical example. Normalized graphs of availability versus N for various combinations of M and R and specific ratios of lambda to mu are determined.
