Optimization of System Design by Spare or Repair Decision through Dynamic Programming,

Abstract

The paper considers the problem of optimizing the decision during the design stage as to whether the availability associated with the system will be attained by sparing or repairing at the appropriate levels within the system. This includes the consideration of the spared items that are simply replaced and those components within the system which are restored by repair to their initial state to be returned to service. This problem is expanded to consider a group of the related problems. The cases considered include those of the frozen design without commonality, the consideration of commonality within the frozen design, and the determination of the level within the system for the sparing to be accomplished.
