A Statistical Analysis of Spectrometric Oil Data from the Transmission of the TH-55A Helicopter and Recommended Improvements for the ASOAP Program.

Abstract

The purpose of Army Spectrometric Oils Analysis Program (ASOAP) is to serve as a diagnostic tool in determining when an oil wetted component is about to fail (before actual component failure) without having to disassemble the equipment. However there is a supplementary reason for analyzing used oil and that is simply to determine its suitability as a lubricant. The objectives of the study were to develop a proposed check list procedure for the research and design of an ASOAP experiment, to develop a procedure for the implementation of an ASOAP data collection system including pertinent chemical and physical tests, and to illustrate applicable statistical techniques (chi-squared test, cross-sectional analysis and the method of least squares) in analyzing ASOAP data. Sample data from the TH-55A helicopter is used for this illustration. (Author)
