Simple Linear-Cavity TEM(00)-mode Mode-Locked Ruby Laser.

Abstract

The authors have designed a simple linear-cavity laser that is passively mode-locked, using a ruby rod only 2.5 mm in diameter and 75 mm long, and have obtained TEM(00)-mode operation. The rod itself is the limiting aperture of the field. The individual mode-locked pulses have energies of 0.2 to 0.3 mJ and are of 20 to 25 psec duration. The energy in the total pulse train is approximately 3 mJ. The probability of obtaining a cleanly locked pulse train exceeds 0.8. A further advantage inherent in the system is that the smooth beam profile minimizes the frequency of mirror damage. (Author)
