Transition from Combustion to Detonation of Commercial Explosives,

Abstract

The authors have investigated a series of present-day commercial explosives for their capacity for combustion-to-detonation transition. Experiments were conducted in steel pipes of various lengths, diameters, and wall thickness. The charges were set off by ignition charges of black powder. The characteristics of the investigated explosives have been tabulated. Experiments were conducted in three series: with steel pipes less than 500 mm long with screw-on caps, with pipes up to 3 m long with sand stemming, and with longer pipes. The process involves acceleration of combustion under mounting pressure after the explosive is ignited.
