Evaluation of a Three-Dimensional Stress Cell for Granular Soils

Abstract

The study presents the results of tests of rigid, solid, spherical, three-dimensional stress cells for measuring the complete state of stress at a point in a soil field under static or dynamic loading. In addition, a theory is presented for defining the behavior of a spherical stress cell embedded in nonlinear materials. The test results indicate that the stress cells are excellent for making static measurements in sand but that their adequacy for dynamic measurements requires further evaluation.
