Supply Management of Interchangeable Items.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to develop effective and responsive methods for using interchangeable and substitute (I+S) item information through the Army supply system down to the user level. The most severe I+S problems were found at direct support units (DSUs), where computer capacities were too small to effectively interrelate records for I+S items. The procedure recommended for this problem at DSUs is to record any two-way interchangeable item on stock records and to stock it in the warehouse as though it actually were the prime item. It would appear that almost every problem of I+S records at DSUs could be virtually eliminated by this method.
