USAF Bird Strike Summary.
Abstract
The document is a statistical report of USAF aircraft damaged by collisions with birds during 1971. There were 383 such occurrences which was 23 more than in 1970. In fact, there were more bird strikes in 1971 than during any previous year. Two of these collisions resulted in major accidents. Two crew members were killed in one of these accidents while in the other, two crew members successfully ejected. As in 1970, windscreen/canopy penetrations continue to be the greatest hazard to aircrews. As has been the case in previous years, a substantial number of birds were ingested by engines. Twenty-six percent of the strikes directly involved engines. (Author)
