A Comparison of Visual and Auditory Displays as Check Out Indicators.

Abstract

Auditory displays have been used in the past mainly as warning devices or static condition displays. The paper reports as experiment comparing visual and auditory displays when used as dynamic tri-level condition displays in an electronic equipment check out procedure. The auditory displays are evaluated in terms of the time required for check out. The research was conducted as part of a maintainability program sponsored by the U.S. Army Materiel Command and is particularly applicable to depot-type maintenance procedures.
