Comparison of Potential Step and Triangular Voltage Sweep Methods of Double Layer Capacitance Measurements. II. Porous Silver Electrodes,

Abstract

An important parameter affecting the performance of electrochemical cells is the wetted surface are of the electrodes. Several methods have been developed for the determination of real, or total surface area. The report describes the double layer capacitance method which involved measurements on porous silver electrodes using both the potential step and triangular voltage sweep techniques. The effects of operating potential, temperature, electrolyte concentration, and electrode thickness on double layer capacitance were investigated. The two methods yielded similar results in the region of minimum capacitance. Both volumetric and gravimetric techniques were used to determine the actual surface areas of the silver electrodes.
