Weather Radar Investigations on an Artillery Test Conducted in the Panama Canal Zone.

Abstract

The Atmospheric Sciences Laboratory (ASL), Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, participated in an artillery fuzing test near Fort Sherman, Panama Canal Zone, during October and November 1968. A radar team and an AN/MPS-34 radar from ASL provided 24-hour radar surveillance of all cloud areas in the vicinity of the firing range. A description of the test and a discussion of radar climatology as deduced from the experiment are presented. Storm characteristics such as size, height, origin, direction, and speed of movement, etc., are illustrated. The potential usefulness of weather radar for detection of precipitation areas posing problems for certain artillery applications is discussed. (Author)
