Time and Space Resolved Measurement of the Gas Temperature and Its Decay in Afterglow Discharges.

Abstract

Using the temperature dependence of the line absorption a method is described which permits the determination of the gas temperature profile and its decay. The measurement itself involves the determination of the line absorption with a mirror and a probing source. Theoretically, approximated expressions are derived for multiple layered media, and for thin layers the corresponding equations are given rigorously. The concept has been tested for the case of pulsed helium afterglows, and the results show satisfactory agreement with acoustically determined temperatures. (Author)
