3 KW SATCOM Transmitter Traveling-Wave Tube.

Abstract

Development of an advanced 3 kW CW transmitter traveling-wave tube designed for military satellite communications is reported in detail. Gain ripple limitation of plus or minus 0.25 dB/40 MHz, the most challenging parameter, was approximately four times as severe a restriction as that imposed on similar tubes already in use in Comsat stations. The bandwidth of 7.9 to 8.4 at 3 kW called for use of a coupled-cavity TWT. An efficiency requirement of 30 percent required large amounts of gain in the output section of the tube and made match factors more critical and more difficult to achieve than those usually encountered. The necessary fine grain gain characteristics necessitated the use of an excellent gain equalizer in an unusual application. (Author)
