A Theoretical and Experimental Evaluation of a Proposed Concept for the Deep Scattering Layer.
Abstract
An experimental apparatus has been designed, constructed, and utilized for electron spin resonance studies of spin labeled proteins and membranes at simulated ocean depths up to 5,000 feet. Hemoglobin, hemocyanin and albumin have been labeled with at least two different nitroxide spin labels and subjected to temperatures ranging between 0 and 43C and pressures up to 2500 psig and studied by electron spin resonance. The effects of salts, hydrogen ion concentration and organic solvents upon spin labeled biopolymers have also been studied as a function of temperature and pressure. (Author)
