Immunoprophylaxis for Control of 'Dirofilaria immitis'.
Abstract
Studies conducted during the second year of the project have been described. Three trials have been completed and two others initiated. The completed trials were undertaken to determine a proper dosage of Cobalt 60 irradiation for attenuating infective Dirofilaria immitis third-stage larvae for use as a vaccine. Two trials are underway to determine the effect of transplanted adult worms on subsequent exposure to infective D. immitis larvae. In each study periodic observations have been made on prepatent periods of D. immitis, hematocrit, hemoglobin, and total and differential white blood cell counts. By using an autoanalyzer, data was also obtained on such serum components as protein-bound iodine, serum glutamic oxalacetic transaminase, inorganic phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, cholesterol, total protein, globulin, blood urea nitrogen, and glucose.
