Brillouin Scattering in Aqueous Glycerol Solutions,

Abstract

Measurements of the frequency shift of scattered 0.6328 micron laser light in glycerol-water mixtures are presented as a function of concentration and temperature. Measurements were made in mixtures containing up to 74 mole percent water over the temperature range +107C to -118C. The results confirm the existence of low and high frequency limiting longitudinal moduli. Calculations of the structural relaxation time of the glycerol-water mixtures at 0.0C are presented, and from these an estimate of the structural relaxation time of pure water is obtained. (Author)
