Efficient Computation of Beam Patterns for Arrays with Tapped-Delay-Line Combiners.

Abstract

Array processing by means of weighted tapped-delay-lines is a potent method for improving the performance of multi-element arrays. The weights on the tapped-delay-lines can be easily and quickly changed, thereby furnishing significant adaptive beamforming capability. A measure of the performance of such an array is furnished by the beam pattern. In this memorandum, formulas are derived for the efficient computation of beam patterns for arrays of arbitrary geometry, with the sensor outputs processed by bulk steering delays and tapped-delay-lines.
