Zero-Crossing Statistics in Signal Detection: Guidelines for Study.

Abstract

Research is in progress on the use of the zero-crossing statistics of a signal in a detection and classification scheme. The present interim statement will serve as theoretical framework and practical guideline for planned detailed study and computer simulations. First simulations indicate that the period histogram is a useful detector for sinusoids above 0 dB. Arguments suggest that its detection capability may be best for low frequencies, both broad and narrow band. Its advantage is the simplicity of its operations - a piece of a sampled clipped signal is passed through counters. Its complementary handicap is its abbreviation of the data. (Author)
