Laser Guided Boring of Major Caliber Gun Barrels.

Abstract

The project established the feasibility of using a Laser beam to guide the boring head in boring a 5 inch gun barrel. Prototype equipment was developed and actual tests made on 10 foot sections of tubing. These tests proved the ability of the system to maintain a straight hole and to correct built-in errors. The ability to maintain a straight bore with a total indicated reading of .017 inch or less was demonstrated. (Author)
