Investigation of the Behavior of High Temperature Materials.
Abstract
The report summarizes investigations of selected materials in three principal areas: Defect structure of metal oxides at high temperatures; Thermoluminescence of doped and undoped ThO2 and; Oxidation of high-temperature materials. Extensive defect structure investigations, including weight and conductivity measurements, were performed on NiO and Sc2O3 and the results are presented with a discussion of relevant defect models. Detailed conductivity measurements on CoO were also made. In addition, conductivity data for 76% CeO2 - 20% ZrO2 4% Y2O3 are presented. The UV excited thermoluminescence of over 40 single crystals of undoped and rare earth doped ThO2 was measured. Presented here is a summary of the major conclusions of this investigation. The oxidation program concentrated on two materials - ZrB2 and ZrB2+20 v/o SiC. Data is also presented on the effect of surface preparation methods on the oxidation of Ti-6A1-4V at 700C. In addition, oxidation data on several Ni-Cr-Y alloys (1000-1200C) is included. (Author)
