Trace Analysis for Metals in Aerospace Materials by Gas Chromatography.

Abstract

Methods were developed for the ultratrace determination of certain metals in various media by chelation and gas chromatography using electron capture detection. Analysis for traces of cobalt in water and liver extract are described. The conversion of cobalt from cyanocobalamine to cobalt heptafluorodimethyloctanedionate followed by analysis by the gas chromograph was achieved. Analytical methods for the analysis of beryllium in particulate matter collected from air and fly ash using chelation-gc methods were developed. A method for the detection of beryllium in urine of workers exposed to fly ash is described. Solvent extraction methods for the extraction of chromium employing methanol as a reaction medium for the relatively rapid formation of chromium heptafluorodimethyloctanedione are described. Chromium has been determined with 90% efficiency in both whole blood and blood plasma. Preliminary experiments on the conversion of hydrocarbon-soluble or suspended particulate iron compounds to Fe(tfa)3 are reported. (Author)
