Epitaxial Film Growth of Bubble Domain Materials.

Abstract

The program's objective is to improve the compatibility between substrates and films of epitaxially grown magnetic bubble domain materials. The initial effort has been concerned with gallium-substituted erbium iron garnet films prepared by chemical vapor deposition. The introductory section of this report contains a discussion of the means by which the requirements for the existence of cylindrical magnetic domains may be met in epitaxial films. The experimental section deals with film and substrate matching, garnet substrate crystal composition determinations, improvements in film deposition control and heat treatment of films. Techniques for characterizing magnetic bubble domain films are reviewed and properties of gallium-substituted erbium iron garnet films are discussed. (Author)
