A Thermal Analysis of the M140 Counterrecoil Spring

Abstract

A thermal analysis of the M140 counterrecoil spring was carried out by the Research Directorate, Weapons Laboratory at Rock Island. An investigation was made to determine the significant physical parameters influencing temperature rise of the counterrecoil spring when this spring rubs against the wall of the cradle recoil-mechanism, and to obtain data for design changes to reduce the temperature rise. A mathematical model of the frictional heating process was developed and programmed for numerical evaluation.
