Surface Waves in the Presence of an Internal Wave,

Abstract

The effect on the normal modes for surface waves in a fluid due to the presence of a single, steady long wavelength internal wave is discussed. Approximate analytic solutions are found for both the resonant and non-resonant case (the former corresponding to a group velocity for the surface wave equal to the phase velocity of the internal wave). Solutions are also found for the case of an impulsively applied internal wave interacting with a surface wave, when the two waves are at or near resonance. (Author)
