Dynamic Strain Measurements with Carlson Strain Meters,

Abstract

In an effort to determine the feasibility of using Carlson unbonded resistance-wire strain meters for dynamic strain measurements at low frequencies normally associated with earthquakes, Carlson strain meters and Microdot embedment strain gages were embedded along the longitudinal axis of 6- by 16-in. concrete cylinders. These cylinders were subjected to sinusoidal compression loadings of 0 to 50,000 lb at frequencies varying from 0.1 to 10.0 Hz. Generally, the response of both types of gages was essentially the same, indicating the Carlson strain meter is a satisfactory instrument for dynamic strain measurement within the test limits. Since there are large numbers of carlson strain meters embedded in most large concrete dams in the United States, this existing instrumentation together with suitable actuating and recording equipment could be used to monitor the dynamic strains associated with earthquakes.
