Brittle Fracture of Solids.

Abstract

In developing a criterion for complete fracture of a solid, it is considered necessary to decide whether a crack, once nucleated, will spread throughout the solid, and this problem has been the salient part of more important theories of brittle fracture. For solids in which a crack initiates and propagates in the same Stroh and Smith have derived from theoretical considerations a condition for nucleation controlled fracture. (Author)
