Gunn Effect Microwave Power Source.

Abstract

The first phase of a research program aimed at developing high power-high efficiency cw transferred electron oscillators (TEOs) in X-band is described. The program goals are an output power of 1.5 watts with 6% efficiency. A thermal analysis of a typical TEO structure was carried out. The influence of various device design parameters such as heat sink thermal conductivity, device diameter, single and dual heat sink configurations and nl product on device efficiency were studied. Based on the guidelines generated by this study, a new device fabrication technology was developed and is being debugged. Preliminary results from plated heat sink devices are described. (Author)
