Experimental Investigation of the Effect of Polyacrylamide Additives on Friction Resistance with a Flow in the Gap between Coaxial Cylinders,

Abstract

Aqueous polyacrylamide (I) solutions had little effect on Reynolds number (RE) and on the transition from laminar to turbulent flow. The threshold RE or threshold friction decreased with increased molecular weight and concentration of I. The effectiveness of I additive to reduce the magnitude of the turbulent flow reached a maximum at a certain shear stress corresponding to a certain molecular weight and concentration. Any further increase in shear stress was accompanied by I degradation. (Author)
