Abstract

The article discusses the background and development of structural linguistics, both in Russia and abroad, from its earliest beginnings to the present time. Structuralism is contrasted with other linguistic approaches, such as formalism, descriptionism, etc. The relevance of structural linguistics to machine translation is also considered. (Author)
