Effects of Various Parameters on Fatigue Life of Wire Rope.

Abstract

The small scale wire rope fatigue testing machine located at the University of Alabama was used to conduct the following investigations on 1/2 inch diameter wire rope: an investigation of the effects of Drucker's dimensionless bearing ratio, B=2T/UDd, on fatigue life of 1/2 inch, 6 x 25 FW, IPS, Lang Lay, FC, Petrolatum lube, wire rope. Fatigue life was determined for the range of B values from 0.005 to 0.025, an investigation of the effects of plastic coated sheaves on fatigue life of wire rope, and an investigation of the effects of sheave material on fatigue life of wire rope. Five different sheave materials were tested, and the results were compared to those from testing on sheaves made of tool steel hardened to Rockwell 60C. (Author)
