Accelerated Fatigue Tests of Wire Rope.

Abstract

Construction of a new machine for testing wire rope under severe conditions of reversed bending was completed. Drucker's dimensionless bearing ratio B = 2T/UDd is used as the criterion for establishing fatigue conditions. Special features of this machine allow for accurate control of fatigue conditions imposed on two test sections of precisely known length. Using the new fatigue machine, tests were conducted to determine the fatigue life of wire rope having individually coated wires. In addition to tests for evaluation of the effects of various coatings, tests were conducted to determine the fatigue life of several types of wire rope having different basic designs. (Author)
