Selecting an Indicator for Evaluating Wear by Neutron Activation Analysis,

Abstract

The theory of selecting an indicator for evaluating wear by neutron activation analysis in a multicomponent system is presented. A graphical method for indicator selection, based on the logarithmic curves of temporal changes of intensities of gamma lines of the elements during their radioactive decay, is presented. The indicator may be determined for an arbitrary irradiation time. A bronze sample containing as 0.01, Sb 0.02, Sn 0.1, Si, 0.1, Al 9.0, Ni 0.5, Pb 0.01, Fe 3.0, Zn 1.0, Mn 0.5, and Cu 86.25 percent was irradiated for various times (10-3000 hr) by a neutron flux. The induced radioactivity was measured and compared with data obtained by modeling the system by a computer.
