The Transmission of Force Between Two Half-Planes

Abstract

Consideration is given to the problem of determining the distribution of stress in a composite solid consisting of two half-planes (of different elastic moduli) joined together when there is a prescribed distribution of body forces acting in one of them. Included are four cases; where one half-plane rests on the other, maintaining contact along their common boundary, where the two half-planes are bounded together, where an imperfect bond leaves a Griffith crack at the interface, and where the lower half-plane is completely rigid.
