Settling of Structures on Thawing Ground (Opredelenie Osadok Sooruzhenii na Merzlykh Ottaivayushchikh Gruntakh),

Abstract

During construction on permafrost the question concerning the amount of forthcoming settlings has unique significance. An estimation of these settlings can be made on the basis of experiments with hot punches. The study examines a procedure for testing with punches. According to this technique, the soil's thawing is envisaged by means of heating the water poured into a test borehole for a depth of 20-30 cm above a sandy filling (20-30 cm) which covers the borehole bottom after the placement of the punch. Heating the water begins after loading the punch with the planned weight. Thawing continues until stabilization of the settlings.
