Experimentation Support for Demonstration of an Automatic Position Reporting Technique at Oakland, California.

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to demonstrate a concept of air traffic control (ATC) that employs automatic position reporting via data link and associated video displays in the oceanic control sectors of an air route traffic control center (ARTCC). Specific objectives were: (1) to determine the feasibility of automatic position reporting via data link; (2) to determine the conceptual suitability of the test sector for oceanic control; (3) to provide environmental and interfacing information; (4) to provide operational information that would be helpful in the preparation of specifications for further development; and (5) to determine relative controller workloads, flight safety, and system capacities.
