Microwave Scattering from Underdense and Overdense Turbulent Plasmas.
Abstract
Experimental results of microwave scattering from turbulent plasma are presented and compared with pertinent theories. For underdense values of mean and fluctuation electron density, scattering is similar to that noted by several other groups, following Born predictions for very weak scattering and saturating as the critical point is approached. Near the critical point for average electron density, a cross-over from volume to surface scattering is observed. For sufficiently overdense values scattering resembles that from a reflecting surface of appropriate shape and statistics, mean density distribution notwithstanding. Scattering in this latter regime is used as a diagnostic tool to determine the probability distribution function for orientation fluctuations displayed by the overdense thrashing plasma column.
