A Study of Library Retrieval and Student Data Base Systems,

Abstract

A description is given of all of the major known data base systems at UCLA in the areas of student records and library retrieval systems - included are some experimental systems as well as those in full operation. An attempt is made to characterize some of the basic processing operations that are inherent in data storage and retrieval systems. The report contains a first approximation at quantitative measurements of low-level machine operations. The measurement data consists of a static count of the source assembly language instructions for the various programs measured. Instructions are categorized by their behavior into a small number of classes. Preliminary results summarize the utilization of each instruction class in data base applications, and thus provide insight into design characteristics of future processors for these applications. Suggestions for future research include other types of measurements that might be made on these systems. (Author)
