Exploratory Analysis of Elastohydrodynamic Properties of Lubricants.

Abstract

Optical film measurements of lubricant elastohydrodynamics have been conducted using a glass flat plate, and traction measurements using both steel and glass flats, in lubricated contact with a special crowned toroidal roller. Plateau film thicknesses have been measured for eight oils at a range of the speed-viscosity parameter comparable to high speed mainshaft bearings. The shape of the elliptical contact in fringegrams is found to be dependent on two dimensionless groups, one involving the speed-viscosity product and the other involving the load.
